Supplementary Food Saves Young Children


by Karin Pretorius and Wandile Mavuso, CommunicationsWhen World Vision was first introduced to Phindile Gadella (1 year, 8 months old) in March this year, she only weighed 4.5 kg – a definite sign of undernourishment. World Vision registered Phindile in the supplementary feeding program, and since then she has picked up a remarkable 2 kg.
Born to Zanele Gadella, Phindile is one of three children, of which the youngest is only one week old. “Phindile has been sick since birth. I know she did not get enough good food, but I did not have anything to give her,” Zanele explains.
As a baby, her condition deteriorated quickly, and she could not crawl or eat like other babies her age. Her whole body was swollen.
“My heart was painful because I knew my baby was going to die if I don’t get
help. I then put my trust in God, and was ready for anything to happen,” she
says.
Zanele took Phindile to World Vision’s Gilgal ADP where they recommended that Phindile be taken to the Good Shepard Hospital in the area. She was kept in hospital where doctors were able to monitor her health, and where she stayed for four weeks. World Vision not only paid all her medical expenses, but also provided ‘e-pap’, beans and oil.
Today, Phindile is still very thin, but she’s healthy and happy. “Compared to other children she is growing very slow, but she’s healthy,” says her thankful mother.
Nokwanda Maziya (10months) was also severely malnourished before World Vision’s Unimix (supplementary food) improved her health. According to her mother, Busisiwe, mother of five, she had lost all hope for her daughter’s health improving.
“She suffered from diarrhea which took most of her weight,” says Busisiwe. “Then Nokwanda developed swollen legs and her hair turned red.”
The family of six usually eats sour porridge with milk, simply because there is nothing else to eat. The drought has destroyed most of Busisiwe’s crops, and she was only able to harvest one bag of maize.
Busisiwe took Nokwanda to the local Sitsatsaweni clinic where she was told that her child was malnourished. She was then given 2kg beans, 6kg of Unimix and 2 bottles of 750ml cooking oil to eat, donated by World Vision.
Before receiving the food from clinic, Nokwanda weighed in at only 6.8kg in February. Today the clinic recorded her weight as 8.3kg. “Now she is able to play with the other children and she now has an appetite like the other children,” Busisiwe marvels.

Wajarkah mengambil makanan tambahan?

RAMAI orang bertanya, “adakah vitamin atau makanan tambahan (supplement) berkesan?” atau “bila ianya diperlukan?”. Lebih parah lagi, ada yang bertanya “adakah ia berbaloi untuk dibeli?”.

Semua persoalan itu mungkin dapat dijawab jika adanya kesedaran mengenai pentingnya penjagaan kesihatan tubuh badan dari awal.

Apatah lagi, tabiat pemakanan kita yang terdedah dengan lemak, manisan dan bahan toksik beracun, menyebabkan pengambilan makanan tambahan sangat penting.

Jika di Amerika Syarikat satu daripada tiga rakyatnya atau 100 juta masyarakat negara berkenaan mengambil makanan tambahan setiap hari dan membelanjakan sekitar AS$6.5 bilion (RM24.7 bilion) setahun untuk tujuan berkenaan, bagaimana pula di negara kita? Pakar Perunding Kesihatan, Zulkifli Ahamad berkata, jumlahnya amatlah sedikit dan kesedaran masyarakat kita masih lagi rapuh iaitu 50-50.

Tidak dinafikan, memang ada golongan muda, sama ada bekerjaya ataupun masih bersekolah, yang mengamalkan pengambilan makanan tambahan sebagai rutin kehidupan seharian.Sama ada diambil dari rumah sebaik selepas bersarapan pagi atau sebelum masuk tidur. Ada juga mengambilnya untuk membentuk otot dan lebih ramai sebagai tujuan kecergasan tubuh badan.

Dua rakan di sebelah kiri dan kanan penulis misalnya, mempunyai bekas khas yang terisi vitamin atau makanan tambahan mereka sendiri untuk persediaan sepanjang seminggu.

Mungkin bagi mereka ia perlu. Al-maklum sajalah kerja di depan komputer, keluar masuk pejabat dan tahap kecergasan menjadi tuntutan apabila berada di dalam bidang ini. Pengacara dan pelakon Cheryl Samad, 27, umpamanya, pengambilan makanan tambahan adalah untuk membantu meningkatkan sistem imunisasi dan mencergaskan dirinya.

Melihat jadual hariannya yang begitu sibuk, memang tidak dapat disangkal makanan tambahan ini amat perlu buat Cheryl.“Ia banyak membantu urusan kerja saya yang memperuntukkan masa 16 jam masa bekerja, kurang ambil cuti dan jarang pula dijangkiti penyakit.

“Saya juga mengambil multivitamin dan kalau tidak diambil untuk beberapa hari, saya akan mudah rasa pening kerana tekanan darah menurun,” katanya yang sudah mengamalkan pengambilan makanan tambahan iaitu Lingzhi, yang berasaskan cendawan dan herba sejak di bangku sekolah.

Dalam sebulan, Cheryl membelanjakan antara RM400 dan RM500 untuk penjagaan tubuh badannya. Mungkin juga kerana statusnya sebagai duta Watson, Cheryl perlu sentiasa kelihatan sihat.

Jika Cheryl setia dengan makanan tambahannya kerana mudah terkena alahan seperti ruam atau bengkak mata jika mengambil bahan lain, ada juga cenderung untuk bertukar makanan tambahan kerana faktor harga.

Jurukamera sambilan, Efra Rino Ripin, 28, sudah tiga kali bertukar produk kerana kekangan kos.

Asalnya mengambil Vitamin B, C dan E secara berasingan, dia bertukar kepada kapsul Borocca yang mengandungi kebanyakan khasiat diperlukan.Namun, disebabkan harganya yang mahal untuk kuantiti yang terlalu sedikit, dia berubah pula kepada produk kesihatan Herbalife.

“Produk Herbalife lebih menjimatkan kerana hadir dalam bentuk serbuk yang boleh saya bancuh dengan minuman kegemaran seperti susu kacang soya.“Kalau ingin sedikit otot kelihatan, saya digalakkan meminumnya bersama telur. Tapi secara asasnya, ketiga-tiga produk ini tidak banyak perbezaan ketara. Yang nyata, pengambilan makanan tambahan membuatkan saya cergas sentiasa,” katanya.

Hakikatnya, kesesuaian sesuatu produk bergantung kepada keperluan badan. Namun, kata Zulkifli, pengambilan makanan tambahan daripada sumber semula jadi seperti tumbuh-tumbuhan, lebah, hasil tenusu dan herba adalah digalakkan bagi mengelakkan terjadinya kesan sampingan.

Bagaimanapun, katanya, tidak ada guna pengambilan makanan tambahan atau vitamin yang teratur, jika tidak minum air secukupnya (lapan gelas sehari) atau terlebih kandungan kafein dan gula di dalam badan.

Faktor berkenaan akan menyebabkan makanan tambahan yang diambil kurang memberi kesan positif.Apapun, satu peringatan penting! Apa juga makanan tambahan yang anda ambil, pastikan terpapar lambang Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, bagi memastikan bahan itu teruji dan selamat berada di dalam tubuh badan.

Amalkan dari zaman kanak-kanakSARANAN kerajaan mencegah lebih baik daripada mengubati seharusnya dipandang serius oleh segenap masyarakat di negara ini betapa penjagaan kesihatan dari awal amat penting berbanding merawat.

Zulkifli bersama variasi makanan tambahankeluaran tempatan.Pakar Perunding Kesihatan, Zulkifli Ahamad mengakui, kebanyakan masyarakat hari ini lebih cenderung mengambil vitamin atau makanan tambahan hanya selepas berhadapan dengan masalah kesihatan.

Sedangkan sebelum itu, katanya, mereka sudah beberapa kali diberi pendedahan mengenai seminar kesihatan yang memberi maklumat akan kepentingan makanan tambahan.

Zulkifli berkata, tidak seperti masyarakat Jepun yang majoriti masyarakatnya mampu hidup sehingga 100 tahun kerana pengambilan makanan sihat dan juga makanan tambahan di usia muda, masyarakat di negara ini kurang mempunyai kesedaran dalam aspek pemakanan yang hakikatnya terdedah dengan bahan beracun atau toksik tanpa disedari.

“Ramai orang kita ingat, kehidupan mereka sudah cukup bagus, lebih-lebih lagi bila tiada tanda-tanda sakit di usia muda. “Mereka juga lebih suka mengambil ubatan berasaskan dadah seperti yang mengandungi parasitomol yang sekadar menghilangkan kesakitan buat seketika.“Ramai juga tidak tahu bahawa dalam satu hidangan nasi yang mengandungi ayam dan sayuran, sebenarnya terdedah dengan bahan toksik.

“Sebab itulah, pengambilan makanan tambahan berasaskan sumber semula jadi yang diperkaya dengan vitamin di dalamnya akan membantu menyeimbangkan kesihatan badan,” katanya kepada i-Kon.

Sambil mengesyorkan beberapa makanan tambahan semula jadi seperti i-Food, i-Kids, Man Pueraria Plus, Woman Lobata dan Lisselife, Zulkifli berbangga kepakarannya dalam bidang kedoktoran selama tujuh tahun digunakan dalam perubatan berasaskan bahan semula jadi seperti susu, madu lebah, rumpai dan tumbuh-tumbuhan.

Dia berkata, ada kanak-kanak berusia empat hingga tujuh tahun yang mengalami penyakit kencing manis atau masalah obesiti dan kerana itu, pengambilan makanan tambahan digalakkan selewat-lewatnya pada usia 18 tahun dan seawal usia setahun.“Ini perlu kerana sekarang ini pada usia 24 tahun pun ada yang menghidapi serangan jantung. Jadi adalah lebih baik diamalkan pengambilan makanan tambahan dari kecil lagi,” katanya.

FAKTA: Siapa yang patut mengambil vitamin/makanan tambahan



Dewasa
Golongan dewasa jarang mengambil makanan seimbang dalam pemakanan mereka. Malah pada lingkungan usia ini juga mereka akan kehilangan vitamin dan mineral penting dalam badan.
Bagi individu yang kurang terdedah dengan cahaya matahari, mereka selalunya kekurangan Vitamin D dan juga Vitamin B penting sebaliknya mempunyai kandungan Vitamin E yang terlalu tinggi.Kandungan dos Vitamin A berlebihan mungkin tidak merbahaya bagi golongan awal dewasa, tetapi menjadi bahan toksik kepada golongan akhir dewasa.

Perokok
Merokok boleh menyebabkan kehilangan beberapa vitamin penting, terutama Vitamin C. Berpandukan kajian, 25 peratus perokok wanita dan 31 peratus perokok lelaki kekurangan Vitamin C.
Pengambilan asid folik sebagai makanan tambahan sangat digalakkan, bagaimanapun pengambilan dos vitamin antioksida yang terlalu banyak akan membawa bahaya.
Daripada mengambil makanan tambahan, kebanyakan perokok digalakkan mengambil buah-buahan segar, sayuran dan bijiran dalam diet masing-masing.

Peminum alkohol
Golongan ini selalunya menghadapi masalah kekurangan kepelbagaian vitamin dalam badan. Paling bahaya apabila kekurangan Vitamin B1 (thiamin), asid folik, Vitamin B6, B2 dan Vitamin C.

Pengamal diet dan vegetarian
Individu dalam program pengurangan berat badan 1,000 kalori sehari, digalakkan mengambil multivitamin dan membuat pemeriksaan paakar kesihatan secara kerap.
Manakala bagi vegetarian, pengambilan makanan tambahan yang mengandungi roboflavin, Vitamin B12 dan Vitamin D, sangat diperlukan.
Mereka yang tidak mengambil bahan tenusu atau telur dan juga daging, mempunyai kebarangkalian mengalami kekurangan Vitamin A. Namun bagi yang mengambil daging, telur dan hasil tenusu, tahap kandungan zat besi perlu diambil berat.

Wanita mengandung dan menyusu
Vitamin B sangat perlu bagi menambah kandungan vitamin sedia ada.

Bayi dan kanak-kanak
Bayi yang mengambil susu ibu sihat selalunya memiliki vitamin secukupnya, kecuali beberapa kejadian kurangnya Vitamin K dan D. Ini kerana susu badan kurang mengandungi Vitamin K. Oleh kerana itu, bayi yang baru lahir sering disuntik dengan vitamin.

Shine up your smile


Brush with success
Whether you're using an electric brush or stuck with the old manual then "Keep the brush at a 45-degree angle and move it back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes," says James Goolnik from the Bow Lane Dental Group. Also, take your time while brushing (a good rule of thumb is about two minutes).

Tip: "The bristles of your brush should not be too hard, because otherwise they can, over time, erode away the gums and lead to a receding gum line. Also, your brush should fit your mouth properly, allowing you to reach all tooth surfaces easily," says Goolnik.

Breath-freshening toothpaste
Any brand of fluoride toothpaste will get those gnashers gleaming. Fluoride helps teeth retain calcium, which keeps them strong and slows the production of acids that attack teeth. Goolnik recommends Breath Rx as a good fluoride paste.

Tip: "Don't waste your money on whitening toothpastes - they cannot whiten your teeth, they'll just reduce stain build-up in the future" says Goolnik.

Slide the floss through
After you've snacked at your desk, if you don't remove the offending chunks within several hours, the decay-causing acids will begin taking effect, and the bad bacteria in your mouth will begin the decay process. Reason enough to start flossing don't you agree?

Tip: Wrap the floss around your middle finger, and use your thumb and forefingers on each hand to grip and manoeuvre the floss. Goolnik says: "You should not jab or force the floss between your teeth while flossing, but gently insert the floss and glide it into a C shape down to the gum line and up again, with a gentle rocking motion."

Wash bacteria away
Okay, we know it gives you fresh breath and we know women are less likely to run away from you when you gargle with mouthwash, but according to Japanese researchers, it also keep colds at bay. There are many varieties available in your local supermarket in which the active ingredients vary from eucalyptus and menthol to antibacterial agents. It's all a matter of taste. Goolnik advises an alcohol-free brand causing less irritation to your mouth with long-term use.
Tip: Drink lots of water to keep your mouth hydrated. It works as a natural mouthwash by washing away sulphurous bacteria that may stop you from having fresh breath.

Scrape off smells
Most women will tell you a man's tongue is an underrated thing, but with more than 100 bacteria, to every skin cell, it's also a bug breeding ground. "Oolit tongue scraper - Scraping away that sticky coating from the back of your tongue twice a day will keep bad breath at bay. Double up with a tongue gel and it will also help break down the gases that cause halitosis," says Goolnik.

Tip: Find out if you have bad breath by performing the ‘lick wrist test'. Lick the inside of your wrist and smell the saliva as it dries. Although not a conclusive test, if the smell is bad then there's a good chance your breath is too.

Chew on it
Sugar-free gum containing the compound xylitol may aid in the battle against tooth decay. According to Goolnik, xylitol replaces calorie-laden sugars that lead to tooth decay - it also helps prevent cavities by curbing bacteria growth. Get chewing.

Tip: Chewing gum is great for after meals but no substitute for cleaning your teeth, try and keep a travel toothbrush and toothpaste in your desk drawer.

20 Beauty Secrets Every Teen Should Know


Or, What We Wish We Knew 20 Years Ago


There's nothing worse than getting advice from older people, we know, we know, but the truth is some advice is worth taking and keeping, especially when it comes to fun beauty tips. We've been reading fashion magazines and testing beauty products for years. In this time, we've read 1000s of beauty tips, tried 1000s of products, but only a few are worth keeping around. So, here we share with you the 20 things we wish we knew when we were teenagers.

1. Skip the foundation If you have acne the first thing you want to do is slather on the thick foundation. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Foundation is for women over 40. Not only will it cover up your natural beauty, but foundation on a teenager looks anything but natural. Instead, cover up blemishes with concealer, then follow with a powder.

2. You pat concealer in, you never rub it in We know this from watching the Tyra Banks show. When applying concealer, put a bit on the pad of your middle finger and pat it in. Never rub. Got acne? Pat the concealer on top of it.

3. Play up your lips or your eyes, never both If you are wearing heavy eye makeup, go for nude lips with just a bit of gloss. Prefer the drama of dark lipstick? Keep face light (stay away from heavy blush) and wear only mascara on your eyes and a light eyeshadow. Don't heavily line your eyes. Play up both and you'll look like a clown.

4. Less is more Ever notice how some of your friends look best with no makeup at all? No matter your age, too much makeup makes you look worse. If you wear foundation, powder, blush, liner, mascara, eyeshadow, lip liner, gloss on an everyday basis, then you're doing too much. Tone it down: All you really need is a great mascara, concealer for acne and gloss.

5. Natural hair is always hot If you have super dark hair, lighten your look by going a shade darker or getting lighter highlights. Blonde? Try highlights, especially around your face. We see too many teens lightening their hair several shades and the look is super tacky, not super fabulous. The trick is to let people assume you were born with sun-kissed hair, not that you gave yourself a bad dye job from a bottle. More hair color tips here.

6. Vaseline is your best friend Skip the bottled cleaners: Vaseline is the best eye makeup remover hands down. It's also great for fixing chapped, scaly lips. Slather on a bunch of Vaseline, then use a toothbrush to massage lips. Wipe the excess off on a tissue. Your lips will be smooth and soft.

7. You can never go wrong with layers Layers are great for any hair type: Super curly, straight or wavy. It makes thin hair appear thicker, curly hair appear manageable and wavy hair appear just-got-back-from-the-beach sexy.

8. Acne? Get thee to a dermatologist, stat Biggest mistake people with acne make? Not going to a dermatologist. Forget those $150 jeans you covet. Getting rid of those pimples will be the best investment you'll ever make. And the only guaranteed way to do it is with a dermatologist.

9. Spend money on key beauty products Not sure what to splurge on and what to save on? Here's our Golden Rules: Don't scrimp on eye shadow, facial moisturizer, powder, self-tanner or lipstick. There's a big difference in quality for these products. Don't waste your money on fancy mascaras, cleansers, eye liners or lip gloss.

10. Buying foundation or lipstick? Test it first There are some beauty products you simply must try out at a department store or Sephora before you buy. These include: Foundation, lipstick, blush and powder. Buy these products in a grocery store and you'll be lucky if you picked the right color for your skin tone. What you can get away with without testing: Mascara, eye liner, most basic eye shadows and lip gloss.

11. When can you skip sunscreen ? Never Here's a trick we wish we knew: The first beauty product you should apply every day is sunscreen, even if it's cloudy or rainy outside. Why? Good habits start young and if you use sunscreen now, you'll have gorgeous skin when you're 50, 60, 70. Plus, the sun's UV rays can penetrate clouds.

12. Wrapping hair around the barrel creates waves There's nothing sexier than long, layered waves. To get them, wind hair AROUND the barrel of a large curling iron. Reverse direction for each 2-inch section (wind up for one, down for another).

13. Self-tanner will always stink Unfortunately, even the best ones smell. Your best bet is to apply self-tanner a good 24 hours before an important event and take a shower (don't loofah) to wash off any smell.

14. Don't let nails go Not into manicures and pedicures? No worries. Just make sure to keep nails clean and the same length. If you do want to paint them, don't keep the polish on until half of it's chipped away. Also, there's nothing worse than too-long toenails. Keep nails clipped between pedicures! People tend to judge others by the care they put into their hands and feet.
15. Don't line the inside of your eyes It will make your eyes appear smaller. Instead, line just at the lash line. Also, an obvious line doesn't look natural. Smudge the line just a bit.
16. Oily hair? Invest in a dry shampoo If you have blonde hair, sprinkling a bit of baby powder on your roots and at your crown will soak up excess oils. If you have brown hair, you might be better off with a dry shampoo for your hair color.
17. Shave legs at the end of the shower Cut down on nicks and cuts by making shaving the very last step in your shower or bathing ritual. Nine more shaving tips here
18. Know your best feature and play it up What feature do people comment on most? Play it up. If you're told you have Angelina Jolie lips, make sure to wear gloss and play with bold lipstick colors. If it's your eye color people love, find eyeshadow colors that complement them and make sure to wear mascara. Also, know what color shirts look best on you and go shopping.
19. Scrubs are great for dry skin If you have dry, itchy skin in winter, invest in a scrub and handmitts and scrub away in the bathtub. Make sure to slather on a thick moisturizer afterward. For dry, callousy feet, buy a pumice stone. They work better than any of the other wimpy options on the market.
20. Remember: Beauty is mostly internal Think about a girl you know who's overweight yet all the guys love her. Why? Because she's confident. If you aren't wearing makeup and your toes haven't been repainted in weeks, if you're happy and smiling you will still be 10 times prettier than the mopey cheerleader sitting next to you in class. Trust us (wink).

Isu Makanan Segera


Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek akan mengemukakan kepada Kabinet supaya iklan makanan segera yang disifatkan sebagai pembunuh senyap, diharamkan.

Beliau juga akan mengadakan perbincangan dengan Menteri Pelajaran, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein tentang kemungkinan menghentikan penjualan makanan segera di kantin-kantin sekolah di seluruh negara.

Soi Lek membayangkan langkah mengharamkan penjualan makanan segera di sekolah akan dikuatkuasakan memandangkan ia telah dilaksanakan di beberapa negara maju.

‘‘Tindakan membawa cadangan (pengharaman iklan makanan segera) ke Kabinet adalah untuk mendengar pandangan Jemaah Menteri, termasuk Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, supaya satu garis panduan jelas tentang iklan makanan segera dapat diwujudkan kelak,’’ katanya.

Soi Lek memberitahu terdapat cadangan supaya pengharaman hanya dibuat ke atas iklan yang membabitkan kanak-kanak sahaja supaya langkah tersebut tidak menjejaskan industri iklan makanan segera yang dianggarkan bernilai RM100 juta.

Bagaimanapun, katanya, cadangan itu tidak praktikal kerana iklan yang disiarkan ditonton oleh semua lapisan masyarakat.

‘‘Kita akan bincang bagaimana iklan makanan segera ini dapat diharamkan kerana bilangan penyakit yang ada hubung kait dengan makanan segera sudah sampai ke tahap membimbangkan.

‘‘Kita akan ambil pandangan yang lebih rasional. Tetapi, mana lebih penting, industri iklan makanan segera yang dianggarkan bernilai RM100 juta atau tahap kesihatan 26 juta rakyat Malaysia,’’ tegasnya.

Mereka terdedah kepada makanan itu yang mengandungi kandungan lemak trans-fats, gula, garam dan bahan kimia yang tinggi. Ia juga dikategorikan sebagai ‘sampah’ dan mengancam kesihatan terutama kanak-kanak.

Penyakit-penyakit yang dicetuskan oleh makanan itu antaranya adalah kegemukan, diabetes, jantung dan kanser.

Sebelum ini, Soi Lek sendiri mengemukakan cadangan menghentikan iklan makanan segera yang disifatkan pembunuh senyap.

Cadangan itu disokong Gabungan Persatuan-Persatuan Pengguna Malaysia (FOMCA) dan pengamal perubatan di negara ini.

Mengulas lanjut, Soi Lek yang sedang bercuti di luar negara sempena Tahun Baru Cina berkata, sekiranya tidak ada usaha bersungguh-sungguh kemungkinan akan berlaku peningkatan penyakit tidak berjangkit yang berhubung kait dengan cara pemakanan di kalangan rakyat.
Ini kerana katanya, pengambilan makanan segera di kalangan rakyat Malaysia, termasuk penduduk luar bandar, sudah sampai ke tahap yang membimbangkan.

Jika di negara maju, kata beliau, orang ramai tidak digalakkan memakan burger pada awal pagi melalui pelbagai kempen termasuk menyamakan pengambilan sebiji burger dengan secawan air laut.

Tetapi di Malaysia, katanya, sungguhpun ada kempen mengamalkan gaya hidup sihat, kesannya begitu terhad.

‘‘Ini kerana, setiap pusat membeli-belah mesti ada (menjual) makanan segera,’’ katanya.

AMALAN diet yang drastik dan pengambilan ubat kurus untuk menurunkan berat badan sebenarnya boleh diibaratkan sebagai tindakan kurang bertimbang rasa terhadap diri sendiri kerana ia bukan saja tidak berkesan, malah boleh mendatangkan kesan negatif tanpa disedari.
Antara punca utama ramai gagal dalam program diet ialah ia sukar dipatuhi, penggunaan bahan tidak selamat dan mempunyai kesan sampingan serta kurang berkesan sehingga menyebabkan ramai berasa kecewa apabila jarum penimbang masih menunjukkan angka sama.
Apabila anda mengamalkan diet drastik, berat badan turun dengan cepat. Sebenarnya berat yang hilang itu adalah berat air dan otot. Namun, selepas satu tempoh biasanya berat badan akan kekal, walaupun jumlah makanan diambil makin sedikit.
Masalah ini membuatkan ramai berasa kecewa dan berhenti separuh jalan. Mereka kembali kepada tabiat pemakanan asal dan menjadi lebih berisi berbanding sebelum mengikuti program diet.
Pengerusi Hal Ehwal Perubatan, Sains Kesihatan dan Pendidikan, Shaklee Corporation, Dr Jamie McManus, berkata ramai tidak sedar mereka mengamalkan diet yang salah sehingga terpaksa berlapar semata-mata mahu menurunkan berat badan.
Apabila kurang makan (jumlah kalori kurang daripada yang diperlukan iaitu 1,200 kalori untuk wanita dan 1,800 kalori bagi lelaki), badan bertindak balas dengan mengambil protein daripada otot sebagai bekalan tenaga.Ini kerana rantaian protein lebih mudah dipecahkan bagi mendapat tenaga, sebaliknya lemak akan disimpan. Proses ini menyebabkan berat badan turun dengan cepat.
“Keadaan ini juga secara tidak langsung menurunkan kadar metabolisme. Ramai tidak tahu otot adalah metabolisme. Sejumlah 0.45 kilogram otot membakar antara 30 hingga 50 kalori setiap hari. “Apabila badan menggunakan protein daripada otot, bermakna kuantiti otot semakin sedikit. Ia bermakna metabolisme juga semakin rendah.
“Sedihnya, kadar metabolisme yang hilang ini tidak berganti. Anda kekal dengan kadar metabolisme rendah. Ini sebabnya apabila seseorang itu kembali kepada tabiat pemakanan asal, mereka mengalami masalah pertambahan berat badan.
“Tenaga yang tidak digunakan disimpan sebagai lemak. Lama kelamaan simpanan lemak dalam badan meningkat dan menyebabkan seseorang itu bertambah gemuk.
“Badan akan mengalami penurunan jisim otot dan peningkatan simpanan lemak. Simpanan lemak yang banyak juga boleh memperlahankan lagi kadar metabolisme dan usaha menurunkan berat badan menjadi lebih sukar,” katanya pada pelancaran program pengurusan berat badan, Cinch anjuran Shaklee Corporation.
Berlebihan berat badan, kegemukan dan obesiti menjadi masalah sejagat. Bagaimanapun, kata Dr McManus, berat badan lebihan bukan satu masalah hinggalah ia menjejaskan kesihatan. Justeru, sebelum ia dianggap sebagai masalah, langkah terbaik ialah mengelakkannya daripada terjadi.Soal Selidik Pemakanan Kebangsaan 2002/2003 yang dijalankan Kementerian Kesihatan ke atas orang dewasa mendapati, masalah berlebihan berat badan meningkat kepada 27 peratus (4.2 juta) berbanding hanya 16.6 peratus (1.7 juta) pada 1996.
Secara purata kadar pengambilan tenaga (daripada makanan) penduduk dunia bertambah 25 peratus, tetapi aktiviti cergas pula berkurang 25 peratus. Senario ini menyebabkan masalah pertambahan berat badan dan obesiti menjadi masalah seluruh dunia.
Masalahnya, ramai tidak sedar mereka mengalami masalah kekurangan zat walaupun banyak makan. Keadaan ini menyebabkan badan menghasilkan isyarat untuk kita makan lebih banyak bagi menampung kekurangan zat tadi.Pilihan makanan yang tidak seimbang dan kurang sihat menyebabkan masalah kekurangan zat tetap berlaku, walaupun makin banyak makan.
Pengurusan berat badan tidak harus diukur pada timbangan saja, sebaliknya ia perlu bersifat lebih menyeluruh seperti peratusan lemak dalam badan, terutama lemak yang berkumpul pada abdomen atau perut.Ubat kurus (termasuk yang diambil di bawah pengawasan doktor) hanya sesuai bagi individu yang terlalu gemuk dengan syarat jika semua langkah seperti bersenam dan kawalan makanan tidak berjaya.
“Pengguna juga perlu lebih berhati-hati, banyak ubat kurus kini diharamkan kerana ada banyak kesan sampingan. Ubat penghalang badan menyerap lemak juga tidak bagus kerana badan memerlukan lemak untuk mendapatkan vitamin A, D, E dan K.

How Can Heart Disease Be Prevented in a Person With Diabetes?

-Get your cholesterol numbers under control. You may need to take medication to do this.
-Lose weight if you are obese.

-Eat a heart-healthy diet low in fat and salt.

What Causes Heart Disease?


The most common cause of heart disease in a person with diabetes is hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of cholesterol in the blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrition to the heart.

This build up usually begins before the increase in blood sugars that occurs in type 2 diabetes. In other words, heart disease almost always has established itself prior to the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

These cholesterol plaques can break apart or rupture, causing blood clots and blocking the blood vessel. This can lead to a heart attack. The same process can happen in all of the arteries in the body, resulting in lack of blood to the brain, causing a stroke or lack of blood to the feet, hands or arms causing peripheral vascular disease.

People with diabetes are also at higher risk for heart failure, a condition in which the heart is not able to pump blood adequately. This can lead to fluid build-up in the lungs that causes difficulty breathing, or fluid retention in other parts of the body (especially the legs) that causes swelling.

Heart Disease: Introduction


Cardiovascular disease occurs when the heart and blood vessels cannot pump enough blood and supply enough oxygen to each of the body's organs. The main forms of CVD are coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, in which a blood clot or a burst blood vessel starves the brain of oxygen. Early symptoms of a heart problem include angina - a specific type of chest pain that indicates the heart is not getting enough oxygen. Angina is usually due to the build up of fatty deposits e.g. cholesterol in a blood vessel.
The heart has to work harder to pump blood through the narrowed vessels, which increases blood pressure. Stress, hormones, fatty foods and toxins from cigarettes all affect the heart. In many cases, a healthy diet and regular exercise will reduce the chance of a heart attack. But genetic factors play a role too. There are a number of different medicines for heart disease. Some reduce cholesterol or blood pressure, others treat irregular heart rhythms. Surgery may be necessary. This can involve physically clearing blockages in blood vessels, bypass surgery or even a heart transplant.



Heart disease is a term that can refer to any condition that affects the muscle of the heart or the blood vessels around the heart. However, when most people talk about heart disease, they are referring to coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is a chronic disease in which the coronary arteries gradually harden and narrow. The condition is also referred to as coronary heart disease.

The statistics on CAD are sobering. It is the most common form of cardiovascular disease in the United States and the leading cause of heart attacks. It is the number one killer of American men and women, responsible for more than one of every five deaths in 2001, according to the American Heart Association.

Further, in 50 percent of men and 64 percent of women who die suddenly from CAD, there are no previous symptoms. Most recent statistics show CAD as the primary cause of premature and permanent disability among American workers. About 84 percent of people who die as a result of CAD are 65 or older.CAD, angina and cardiac ischemia

People with CAD tend to have periodic episodes in which the heart does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood (cardiac ischemia). A person may feel no symptoms during these episodes ("silent" ischemia) or might experience significant chest pain, pressure or discomfort. Such episodes are temporary, but if cardiac ischemia is severe or lengthy, it could trigger cardiac arrest (heart attack, a condition in which the heart stops beating) or heart failure.

Feeling Stressed?

You just missed a deadline at work, you're supposed to chaperone your son's school field trip, and your mechanic called to tell you your car's transmission is shot.

Stressed to the max?

Everyone experiences stress. And many people are stressed every day. But, stress isn't always as obvious as in the example above. In fact, some people don't even realize how much stress they're under until they suffer serious physical consequences of that stress.

Psychologist Anie Kalayjian, professor of psychology at Fordham University, said she's had patients end up in the emergency room, convinced they were having a heart attack, but instead, it was just the body's extreme response to stress.

"If you're a person running around with high energy or nervous energy, you may not realize that you're stressed until you collapse!" said Kalayjian.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, some possible signs that you're under too much stress are: Anxiety, back pain, stiff neck, depression, fatigue, trouble sleeping, unexpected weight changes, headaches, relationship troubles and high blood pressure.

"People need to start proactively trying to prevent episodes before they have extreme reactions," recommended Kalayjian.

But that doesn't mean you should make managing stress just another item on your "to-do" list, cautioned Gail Elliott Evo, the integrative medicine coordinator at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.

"We talk so much about stress now. It's to the point that people are now feeling judgmental when they experience stress and can't eliminate it. But, unless you're a guru sitting in a temple in Tibet, I don't think you can avoid stress. There will be periods where you'll have stress," she said.



Still, managing stress or reducing it as much as you can is a smart idea, because constant stress leaves your body flooded with stress hormones, which can increase your risk of heart attack and other serious health problems.


"Stress causes physical and psychological reactions. It can alter your sleep. It leaves you constantly in fighting-mode and leaves your immune system suppressed. You may get sick a lot," Kalayjian said.


There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to managing stress.


"Some things will be right for one person but not for another. Be open, and try things. Give something a try, and if it's not right for you, move on to something else. You'll eventually find something that's right for you," said Evo.


Some of the approaches she recommends include: Massage, healing touch, yoga, tai chi, walking, meditation and guided imagery.


Kalayjian said a good place to start de-stressing is with deep breathing.


"One minute per each hour of the day, you need to sit and do nothing but focus on breathing. No phones, no lists, no responsibilities. It's almost like how you recharge your battery for your mobile phone. We need to recharge, too," she said.


She also recommends exercise. "Don't wait to feel stressed. Get at least a half an hour of exercise every day. It gets a lot of the toxins and stress out of our bodies," Kalayjian said.
Kalayjian also advocates something she calls "journaling."


"It helps to put things on paper and outside of yourself. You don't have to store it in your heart, body or mind. When we journal, we let go of things and that acts as a release," she said.


She also suggests getting organized. "Many people waste 20 percent of their time looking for things. Try to be organized. Label things. Have organizers. It seems very mundane, but helps tremendously in saving your energy," Kalayjian said.


Evo said many people use a combination of techniques to relieve their stress.


"Be playful with it. Try different things," she said.


Kalayjian agreed, adding that people need to "learn how to have a sense of humor, to laugh and make others laugh, too."


Finally, Kalayjian advised that if you try several different methods to "de-stress" and just can't seem to relax, you could probably benefit from seeing a psychotherapist.

Mitos Kehamilan, Benarkah?

Tidak boleh memotong atau menjahit baju.
Mitos: Tidak boleh memotong atau menjahit baju selama kehamilan atau anak akan lahir dengan bibir sumbing.
Fakta: Bibir sumbing biasanya karena pengaruh obat-obatan yang diminum ibu saat hamil, efek radiasi atau factor genetic. Oleh karenanya x-ray tidak dilakukan selama kehamilan kecuali atas indikasi tertentu.

Mitos: minum susu kacang atau makanan dari kacang kedelai akan membuat bayi berkulit putih.
Fakta: warna kulit seseorang dipengaruhi oleh factor genetic ayah – ibunya, bukan dari susu kedelai.
Jeruk akan meningkatkan lendir pada bayi dan resiko kuning pada bayi baru lahir.
Mitos: Jangan makan jeruk terlalu sering akan meningkatkan lendir pada paru bayi dan resiko kuning saat bayi lahir.
Fakta: Jeruk adalah sumber vitamin C dan serat yang baik.
Minum ais akan menyebabkan bayi besar.
Mitos: Sering minum es saat hamil menyebabkan bayi besar dan akan sulit lahir.
Fakta: Bayi besar biasanya berhubungan dengan ibu hamil yang mempunyai penyakit kencing manis. Jadi mungkin es ini diminum oleh ibu hamil yang memang dengan riwayat penyakit kencing manis. Jadi bukan minum es lalu menyebabkan bayi besar karena air es akan dikeluarkan oleh tubuh sebagai keringat atau air seni.
Makanan pedas akan menyebabkan bayi lahir dengan bercak kulit kemerahan atau berkulit lebih gelap.
Mitos: Makan makanan pedas saat hamil akan menyebabkan bayi lahir dengan bercak kulit kemerahan atau bayi akan berkulit lebih gelap/hitam.
Fakta: Sekali lagi warna kulit seseorang tidak ditentukan oleh makanan pedas, tapi factor genetic dari orang tuanya. Dan faktanya bahwa makan makanan pedas saat hamil, membuat rasa tak enak diperut apalagi bila anda sedang mual, jadi bukan karena menyebabkan bercak kemerahan pada kulit.
Banyak lagi mitos kehamilan lainnya yang terdapat dalam masyarakat kita. Ketika anda sedang hamil dan mendapatkan berbagai nasehat atau pantangan, ingatlah untuk selalu mendapatkan fakta dan kebenaran secara medis atau ilmiahnya. Lecithin


Lecithin adalah campuran glycolipids, triglycerides, dan phospholipids (e.g. phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, dan phosphatidylinositol). Bagaimanapun, dalam biochemistry, lecithin digunakan sebagai sinonim untuk phosphatidylcholine tulen, sejenis phospholipid yang merupakan komponen utama pecahan phosphatide yang boleh didapati daripada kuning telur atau kacang soya.
